The largest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in America! New York City hosts the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade each year which also happens to be the world’s oldest civilian parade.
According to Irish legend, Saint Patrick used the iconic shamrock as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when first introducing Christianity into Ireland! • Pubs within Ireland used to be closed on St. Patrick’s Day! It wasn’t until the bank of holiday act of 1903 that marked the move as religious respect was repealed in the 1970s that pubs were allowed to be opened once again on St. Patrick’s Day.
Saint Patrick was once a slave, at the young age of 16 Saint Patrick was kidnapped by a group of Irish pirates and taken to work in Ireland as a slave. He later escaped and fled back to Roman Britain where he was born before making his way back to Ireland as a Christian missionary.
Saint Patrick’s original name was ‘Maewyn Succat’ but he changed it to ‘Patricius’ after choosing to become a priest.
