Blue Monday 2019

Everyone in the business world slightly resents a Monday. Returning to a high stress environment after a relaxing weekend is always going to sour your mood slightly, and today, January 21, is officially ‘Blue Monday’ – apparently the most depressing day of the year.

Blue Monday was created back in 2005 by Sky Travel Shop, a television channel devoted exclusively to programs about travelling, documentaries and commercials for travel agencies. The day was originally part of a publicity campaign, but later gained worldwide popularity. With the help of Dr Cliff Arnall, Sky Travel managed to precisely calculate the most depressing day of the year using a variety of factors including debt, Christmas blues, failed New Years resolutions and weather which all come together on a certain Monday in January which should find us feeling our worst. However, the formula for calculating which day is the “bluest” day has been mocked by many academics, as it does not use any specific units and does not seem to be particularly foolproof.

Dr Cliff Arnall precisely calculated the most depressing day of the year, using the following formula:

{\displaystyle {\frac {[W+(D-d)]\times T^{Q}}{M\times N_{a}}}}

W=weather, D=debt, d=monthly salary, T=time since Christmas, Q=time since failing our new year’s resolutions, M=low motivational levels, and Na=the feeling of a need to take action.

Where can you get help?

If it’s not just Monday getting you down, people are available to talk t support, the Samaritans are available 24 hours a day on 116 123 or through their website.

Happiest day

Arnall also says, in a press release commissioned by Wall’s, that he has calculated the happiest day of the year, June the 18th.
