World Alzheimer’s Day – Part of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
World Alzheimer’s Month is the international campaign by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. World Alzheimer’s Day was launched in 2012 and falls on 21 September each year.
2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little to no understanding of dementia in their countries. The impact of World Alzheimer’s Day is growing, but the stigmatisation that surrounds dementia as well as the much needed medical advances through research remains a global problem, that requires global action.
Our very own Marketing Manager, Charlotte Ford, is getting involved this Alzheimer’s Month to help raise funds towards vital research for dementia. Charlotte and her family are taking part in a Memory walk in Leicester.
What is the Memory Walk?
Charlotte: The Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk is a walk held in various locations across the UK, where those who support the cause, or have been affected by dementia, come together to walk for a world without dementia. The walk I am participating in is being held in Leicester, starting at Abbey Park, on the 30th September. September is actually Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to take part. The money raised by this walk goes towards a number of factors relating to dementia, from research into finding a cure, to care and support for families of those who suffer with dementia.
What inspired you to take part in it?
Charlotte: I have chosen to take part in this year’s memory walk along with my family. Dementia is something that has affected our family in a number of ways and we have relied upon the amazing support programmes that charities such as this one provide. We have chosen this year to participate in memory of my father, Graham.
How are you fundraising?
Charlotte: My family have set up a fundraising team, called “Team Graham”, and are fundraising together via JustGiving. Friends and family are donating to support us and the cause.
For anyone reading this who’d like to get involved, how do they?
Charlotte: The Memory Walk is held all over the country. In order to find the one closest to you, simply visit https://www.memorywalk.org.uk/ and search via town or postcode to find the one nearest to you and information about the date it is being held. The Memory Walks are not all held on the same date. After registering for your specific Memory Walk, you receive your own Memory Walk t-shirt and fundraising pack in the post.
